Explore movement, physical theatre and choreography at our Performance Taster Day on 13 June 2024 as your students will join us for a workshop and seminar.

They'll also get to explore our creative hub for drama, theatre and performance and uncover exciting career routes into degrees that offer personal and professional growth.

At our Performance and Theatre Taster

your students will:

  • Get interactive with a workshop covering Physical Theatre and how they can use their movements to convey meaning

  • Involve themselves in important discussions around musicals and meaning behind choreography

  • Uncover what studying a Performance degree looks like from the lecturers that could be teaching them and marvel at the regular guest speakers that undergraduates get to hear from

  • Take a glimpse at the White Swan Building, the home to Performance students to hone their talents using drama studio spaces, a TV studio, control rooms and music practice areas

  • Explore our links with the New Theatre Royal where your students could showcase their performance pieces

  • Hear from current students about their experience of studying creative courses at the University of Portsmouth and put their questions to them; from the courses on offer to life at uni

Location and meeting point

Check in opens at 12.45pm at White Swan Building, White Swan Rd, PO1 2DT. Look out for our students in purple T-shirts who'll help direct you.

Here's what's coming up at the taster afternoon.

Check in from 12.45pm at White Swan Building, White Swan Rd, PO1 2DT and get ready to get hands-on with Movement and Musical Theatre at Portsmouth.

Your students will learn how Performance at Portsmouth can open doors to exploring Musical Theatre, Playwriting, Theatre for different Audiences and adapting their craft for a variety of audiences.

Movement and Physical Theatre in Performance**

Adventure into the world of physical theatre where movement is the primary method of storytelling. Your students will use techniques combining gesture to tell a story.

*Note: this is 1 of 2 sessions running at this time:

  • Choreography and Musical Theatre
  • Movement and Physical Theatre in Performance

Students will attend any 1 of these sessions during this particular timeslot, and will experience both sessions over the course of the afternoon. 

** No experience is necessary but comfortable clothing is advised and be prepared to move during this session

It's time to get in a quick break, consolidate what they've learnt so far and get in a stretch before moving on to their next session.

Choreography and Musical Theatre

Your class will unravel the socio-political gems behind hit West End and Broadway musicals. They'll uncover the powerful messages woven into the choreography behind electrifying performances.

The floor is open for you and your students to ask questions.

You'll have the attention of lecturers and current students to pick their brains about different performing arts courses, the transition from college to Uni and moving away from home - or whatever else they want to know about uni.

* Sessions may be subject to change and will run on a rotational basis so, depending on your group, this may not be the exact timings that you'll experience these activities on the day itself.
