ICG Software Innovation Service
Research and application of software innovation
The Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation’s Software Innovation Service provides expertise in creating software that can handle vast data sets, complicated taxonomies and specific business needs.
Our team of programmers and engineers provide help to researchers within the University and with external funding partners, from the UK Space Agency to citizen science projects. We can bring our big data expertise to bear on projects outside astrophysics too, such as our recent collaboration with DEFRA on species identification with managed fisheries.
We’re experienced in joining projects as domain experts, learning the language of our partners - be it penguin conservationists or oil spill management teams - and turning diverse live data from multiple sources into a rapidly-functioning analytical project.
Our expertise
Expertise in the team includes
- Understanding large, noisy data sets.
- Converting multiple live data sources - eg photos, GPS data - into an actionable aggregated data set with transition layers
- Application of the SCIAMA Supercomputer [link] to your data
- Machine learning / artificial intelligence
- Citizen Science projects (Zooniverse)
- Custom software engineering (Python)
- Statistical understanding
Our projects
- Zooniverse
- Tactile Universe
- DEFRA fish classification
- Battery management software
- Supervision of projects in industry
- Postgraduate research in the University of Portsmouth
Our funding
Funders include:
- UK Space Agency
