Drone club members 2023 hold work in progress

Build your own autonomous drone, as part of a student-run team, while you study with us.

In the Drone Club, you’ll be part of a team of 10 students who design, build and test an entry to the international UAS Challenge competition run by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).  Your Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) will be a fully autonomous 10kg drone, able to recognise shapes and patterns on the ground using image recognition software, drop an aid package at a designated location, and perform other humanitarian tasks set by the IMechE.

The Drone Club is open to students from all years on courses in the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. As a member, you’ll have access to a dedicated space in Anglesea Building, where you’ll be able to take advice from the club’s academic lead and technical support staff, and to use the budget provided by the Faculty of Technology.

Benefits of Drone Club

Being part of the Drone Club can enhance your academic and professional development. You’ll be able to:

  • Put your engineering study to work in a practical situation
  • Show you can deliver a multi-disciplinary project to high quality, on time, on budget
  • Communicate the value of your work to potential funders, and secure funding to increase a project’s budget
  • Make critical design decisions based on your theoretical knowledge.
