Summary

I am the Associate Head of Portsmouth Law School and a Principal Lecturer specialising in tort and media law.

The Associate Head is a key management role, in which I am responsible for the planning and resourcing of the teaching in the Law School; the overall quality management of the teaching and developing streamlined practices.

I have experience in teaching contract, tort, English legal systems and I am an experienced personal tutor. My research interests include tort law, media law and legal education.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and I have helped shape teaching and assessment in the Law School.

After studying law at undergraduate and postgraduate level at the University of Portsmouth, I became a Lecturer here in 2012.

I have a particular interest in our students' experience on their course and in their wellbeing; my mental health training enables me to signpost students to the right providers of support if needed. I am also trained in first aid.

Biography

I studied at the University of Portsmouth from 2007 to 2010 for my Bachelor of Laws (Law and European Studies) degree, followed in 2011/12 by my Master’s in Law and Corporate Governance, which enabled me to become a member of The Chartered Governance Institute.

I began part-time lecturing in law at the University in 2012, progressing to full-time Senior Lecturer in 2015. I became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2018.

I presented at the Association of Learning Technology's conferences in 2016 at Northumbria University and in 2017 at Portsmouth, when I was a member of the School of Law's organising committee.

Research interests

My current interests focus on the contentious issues surrounding privacy and freedom of expression on the Internet and the associated information technology law. I have developed a Media Law module for our second year students.

More generally, in the course of my role I carry out research into legal education; in particular, I examine course feedback so that we continue to respond positively to our students’ needs in terms of teaching methods and support. I have undertaken training to recognise mental health issues and where necessary I am able to point students to appropriate sources of advice. I gained a certificate in first aid at the University in September 2019.

Teaching responsibilities

I coordinate and teach on tort law module at level 4 and media law at level 5. I deliver a psychiatric harm legal project to final year students and supervise dissertations in these areas.

I have taught on a range of additional modules including business, employment, intellectual property, and medical law. At postgraduate level I have taught on the legal approach to business module.
