Biography

I completed my Biochemistry Hons degree and PhD at Strathclyde University, Glasgow, UK, and after postdoctoral fellowship at the same University, joined MRC Dunn Nutrition Unit in Cambridge and then moved to a 5* rating Northern Ireland Centre for Diet and Health in Coleraine, UK, before taking up Senior Lecturer position at the University of Portsmouth, the UK in 2002. At Portsmouth, I have been a course leader for MSc Biomedicine, Chair of MSc BOS and UAB; member of the Science Faculty Ethics Committee, and coordinator for several undergraduate and postgraduate modules. I am an editorial board member of several journals; a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, and have been a member of The Nutrition Society, Society for Free Radical Research, and a Regional Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Research interests

My current research interest is in the field of diet and lifestyle intervention of diabetes and cancer.

 I have been an internal and external examiner for PhD thesis.

  I have been an invited speaker at national and international conferences.

  I have held grants held from The Wellcome Trust, H.J. Heinz Co. UK Ltd, EEC, MAFF Food Research, The Nuffield Foundation, The Howard Foundation, PaCaSO, Animal Free Research UK.

  I have more than 80 publications which include 43 peer-reviewed papers, 6 book chapters/letters to editors, and 39 abstracts. Currently, I am supervising postgraduate students (PhD, MD, MRes) in the diabetes, cancer, and nutrition area.

Teaching responsibilities

I am a module coordinator for Integrated Pathology and Nutrition modules for undergraduate Biomedical Science students. I am also contributing in the teaching of undergraduate modules on Pathological Sciences, Research Methods, Key skills for Biomedical scientists, and both undergraduate and postgraduate student projects modules.
