Biography

A civil engineering surveyor by training, I worked in Hong Kong for Boskalis International BV at the New Airport land reclamation project after my study at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. In 1994, I completed a MSc in London in 1994 and then worked at Nottingham Trent and Oxford Brookes as a researcher and lecturer.  Since 2007, I have been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and in 2011 a Chartered Land Surveyor with the RICS through its academic qualification route. Along with my teaching, I have been involved in a range of geospatial, demographic and e-learning research projects during my time at the University of Southampton and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Outside the education sector, I regularly provide surveying consultancy to industrial companies and have recently surveyed vessels in Abu Dhabi and in northern Germany. I have in the past worked with the Ordnance Survey GB, the Royal Society of Geography and the University of Nottingham to run the Open Data Master Classes series 1 and 2 and also carried out charitable geometric and condition surveys for historic buildings around Portsmouth. Since 2014, I have been a Senior Teaching Fellow with the School of Civil Engineering and Surveying at the University of Portsmouth.
