Portsmouth is a great place to live – a friendly city bursting with culture and character. We have four miles of beach and almost everything is within walking distance. All our halls are centrally located and close to the main campus.
Plus, Portsmouth is in the top five most affordable places to live as a student in the UK (Natwest Student Living Index 2023) – so you'll have a place to call your own in a modern city that won't break the bank.

Accommodation for semester exchanges and study abroad
Joining us in September 2024?
If you’re a new student starting at Portsmouth in the first semester of the academic year, you can secure a guaranteed room in halls of residence.
All you need to do is meet our accommodation deadlines. So, make sure you apply early.
As an exchange student, you can apply for accommodation as soon as we’ve sent your official acceptance email.
If you miss our deadlines or prefer not to live in halls, there’s lots of private rented accommodation available in the city to suit a variety of budgets.
Important information for students joining us in January 2025
If your course starts in January 2025, you'll be sent an email from Student Housing advising you on latest information on your accommodation options once you hold an unconditional offer of study with Portsmouth.
Please note that for students arriving for study in January, halls will be allocated subject to availability, and we recommend that you start considering all other private rented accommodation options as well. All January arrival students should make sure that they have booked accommodation prior to arriving in Portsmouth.
We will aim to guarantee a place in halls as long as you submit your accommodation application by the deadline outlined in the email you'll receive inviting you to apply for accommodation. It’s important to complete your application as soon as possible before this deadline to give you the best chance of securing the type of hall you want – places are allocated in order of application receipt.
Please note that if you have not secured long term accommodation prior to your arrival, you are required to book a hotel or bed and breakfast - the University does not have any temporary or emergency accommodation for students (or any dependants).
Please be aware that the University has no family or couples accommodation. Students who intend to bring dependants/family will need to find suitable accommodation via the private sector rental market. We would not recommend arriving to the city with family/dependants until you have secured suitable accommodation. You may need to widen your search outside of the main campus/city area to open up suitable housing options.
Our Student Housing team can give you the latest information on housing options available.
