Dr Christina Philippou received recognition for her research when she recently attended a Royal Garden Party, given by His Majesty the King at Buckingham Palace.
Dr Philippou was invited for her ‘outstanding services to Sports’, as recommended by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) for advisory and research work done in relation to the introduction of an independent regulator for football.
Dr Philippou, Associate Professor in Accounting and Sport Finance, said: “It was a wonderful day celebrating public service. We met people who had worked on projects including the Online Safety Bill, conservation and inclusion, from the military, government and general public. The gardens were gorgeous, the military bands brilliant, the tea sumptuous and the general atmosphere fantastic, plus the sun shone on us throughout the celebrations.
“His Majesty the King, Queen Camilla and other royals present were very generous with their time in the lanes.”

Each year, DCMS are invited by Buckingham Palace to recommend British citizens who have made an outstanding contribution, either nationally or locally, to attend a Royal Garden Party.
Dr Philippou was recommended alongside Kieran Maguire from the University of Liverpool, with whom two reports on the financial state of English football were co-authored to support the government’s work towards the Football Governance Bill.
The Bill had its Second Reading debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday 23 April and has now been sent to a Public Bill Committee, which will scrutinise the Bill. She has been invited to provide oral evidence to the Committee on Tuesday (14 May).
Dr Philippou has also been on a number of panels in relation to both men's and women's football, as well as feeding into a review of professional rugby union over the last few years.
