Whether you’re a seasoned space enthusiast or just curious about the stars, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during World Space Week in Portsmouth.

From Thursday 3rd to Saturday 12th October 2024, there will be a number of space-related activities happening in the region to celebrate World Space Week 2024, an international celebration of science and technology. Many are free of charge.

Throughout the week, there will be a range of events designed to inspire and engage the community, including:

  • Mission design school workshops: Ideal for budding young space engineers, these workshops will guide participants through the basics of designing a space mission

  • Family-friendly activities: From hands-on experiments to stargazing sessions, there are plenty of opportunities for families to learn and explore together

  • Intergalactic cinema: Enjoy Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey

  • Expert panel talks: Join leading experts from the space industry as they discuss how space technology impacts our daily lives and the groundbreaking research being conducted in Portsmouth

Dr Jen Gupta, from the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, is co-ordinating the series of events. She said: “World Space Week is a fantastic opportunity for Portsmouth to showcase its role in the global space industry.

“Celebrating this event here allows us to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, while highlighting the incredible research and innovation happening right here in our own city.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming people to events and activities across the city to inspire them about space exploration!”

The University is home to a Mission Design facility to help people design spacecraft and missions, ASTA Technology - the UK’s only ESA-accredited provider of space engineering training - and a founding partner of Space South Central.

It is also developing plans for a Portsmouth Research Institute for Space Missions (PRISM) which will bring all its space activity under one roof, including mission design, and will be closely connected to the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG)
