Dr Vasileios Karagiannopoulos, Director of the Cybercrime Awareness Clinic and Co-director of the Centre for Cybercrime and Economic Crime at the University of Portsmouth is one of the criminology consultants for an exciting new true crime series, which investigates how video footage leads to the conviction of killers around the world.

‘Killers caught on camera’ will air weekly from Wednesday 15 February at 10pm on CBS Reality UK - Sky 146 / Freeview 67 / Virgin 148 / Freesat 135. Each episode focuses on two different murders which have been solved by using video footage.  Dr Karagiannopoulos is one of the digital evidence experts who guides the viewer through the key footage and critical moments to reveal the story of what happened in each case.

Information gathered from these cameras can be combined with other digital and forensic evidence to assist law enforcement agencies in solving the crimes and convicting the perpetrator.

The true crime series provides context to the killings, the science behind murder, and what happens in relationships to drive people to kill. In an age where cameras monitor our every move 24/7, whether it be the phone in our hands, cameras on public buildings or in our homes, our digital footprint is everywhere. Everyone is a potential witness.

Dr Karagiannopoulos, who appears in six of the episodes, gave his insights into the crimes with the help of a giant video wall.  He says: “Working on the TV series with Back2Back productions was a very interesting and rewarding experience. The series explores the role of CCTV cameras in murder cases in the UK and the US. It shows how information gathered from these cameras can be combined with other digital and forensic evidence to assist law enforcement agencies in solving the crimes and convicting the perpetrators.”

We are really pleased to have been able to work with Dr Karagiannopoulos. His contributions added another layer of insight to each case.

“Some of the cases discussed from the UK are the murder of Kerry Wooley, who was killed by her partner in her apartment in Solihull, and the murder of Phoenix Netts in Birmingham by Gareeca Gordon during the first COVID-19 lockdown. Both these shocking cases demonstrate the importance of footage gathered by public, and even private, CCTV for the investigators - both in terms of creating a storyline and piecing together the movements of the suspects, but also identifying the existence of additional evidence that can be crucial to the case.”

Nigel Gainsborough, Series Producer for Back2Back productions ltd, said: “We are really pleased to have been able to work with Dr Karagiannopoulos. His contributions added another layer of insight to each case. The video wall facility also made a huge impact on the production values and way we analysed the evidence captured on camera.”

The series will air weekly from Wednesday 15 February at 10pm on CBS Reality UK - Sky 146 / Freeview 67 / Virgin 148 / Freesat 135.
