The University of Portsmouth is set to open an Admissions and Recruitment Centre in Walthamstow Library as it prepares to launch its London campus in Waltham Forest.
Visitors to the library and nearby Walthamstow Market will notice University of Portsmouth London signs going up for the new administrative office on the ground floor. Library services and the public space within the library will be unaffected.
We announced the University’s exciting plans in March 2022 and work has been going on behind the scenes to make the London campus a reality.
The University of Portsmouth is one of the top modern universities in the country. Its London campus will offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as work-based learning opportunities in the form of apprenticeships and flexible continuous learning programmes, all designed with the skills needs of local people and businesses in mind.
The campus plans to welcome its first post-graduate students in January 2024, occupying two floors in Juniper House near Walthamstow Central Station. The University’s partner, Northchild Group, will deliver state of art campus facilities and services that will enable the University to grow and expand its highly rated teaching locally. The number of students will grow steadily over the next few years as more courses are added and a main campus building is constructed nearby on the site of the current Central House.
A London campus will allow us to share our expertise and programmes in ways that best support the aspirations of local students and the local community, while preserving and promoting what makes the University of Portsmouth distinctive.
Professor Graham Galbraith, University of Portsmouth Vice-Chancellor
Cllr Grace Williams, Leader of Waltham Forest Council, said: “It’s wonderful news that the University of Portsmouth has chosen our borough for its new London home. A university in Waltham Forest was one of our key pledges at last May’s local election and I’m excited to see this first step on the way to making it a reality.
“The University of Portsmouth shares the Council’s vision for an accessible, diverse and welcoming campus, with sustainability at its heart. Education has the power to transform people’s lives and the University of Portsmouth’s new London campus will offer a world class education, high quality jobs and huge business opportunities right here in Waltham Forest.”
It’s estimated that the new campus will boost the borough’s economy by up to £372 million over the next 20 years, with benefits to local supply chains, research opportunities for local businesses, the creation of over 500 new local jobs and more.
