The University of Portsmouth has demonstrated its expertise in the field of cybercrime and cybersecurity after being named a finalist for the Cyber University of the Year award at the National Cyber Awards 2024.
The achievement is in recognition of its outstanding contributions to cyber-related education and learning as well as research and innovation. The University provides a wide range of academic programmes and engages in diverse research and innovation activities with international academic, government and industry partnerships.
Its recently launched Centre for Cybercrime and Economic Crime is spearheading recent efforts in associated fields and has established educational and research collaborations with partners in South Korea, India, Kazakhstan and the EU. Research focuses on multiple cyberthreats from online fraud and gender violence to hacktivism and online terrorism and we constantly work with our partners to improve cybersecurity and increase awareness and education nationally and internationally.
The awards are a prestigious event - now in their sixth year - which recognise outstanding contributions and achievements in cybersecurity.
As digital threats continue to grow, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. Cyber attacks pose a significant risk to businesses, governments, and individuals.
Established as a hallmark of excellence in the industry, the National Cyber Awards set a benchmark of excellence. Now in their sixth year, the accolades are designed to encourage innovation, resilience, and dedication of safeguarding the digital landscape as well as the continuous improvement and the adoption of best practices across the globe.
We are working hard to contribute to tackling cybercrime both nationally and internationally and to prepare future cybersecurity leaders and innovators.

Dr Vasileios Karagiannopoulos, co-Director of the Centre for Cybercrime and Economic Crime and Clinic lead, said: “We are thrilled to see the hard work of colleagues from the Centre for Cybercrime and Economic Crime and from the University of Portsmouth more widely to promote cybercrime and cybersecurity education, research and innovation are being acknowledged.

This award nomination is a testament of our efforts and an incentive for us to further develop our teaching provision and research and innovation portfolios to engage with the rising challenges new technologies bring.”
The awards ceremony will feature categories spanning from The Cyber Citizen of the Year, The Cyber Student of the Year, and The Cyber Policing Team of the Year, all the way through to The Prime Minister's Award for Cyber. Nominees and winners will be celebrated for their significant impacts in securing cyberspace against evolving threats.
Commenting on the awards, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: “The National Cyber Awards are a wonderful way to reward, celebrate and showcase the work of those who are committed to keeping us safe.
