BA (Hons) Television Production portfolio guide
How to put together a creative portfolio for your course
Digital portfolios only are expected for this course, and are required for direct entry into years 2 or 3 (level 5 or 6) entry. Please read the guidance below:
What to include in your portfolio
We would like to see a range of examples of television production. This should include storyboards, mood boards, examples of video production, editing (Avid Media Composer), TV programme production, writing and presenting for television, video encoding, examples of web design, examples of post-production, inserts for TV, Short Factual Programming and examples of project management processes for television production.
You should aim to submit 5 static images and a maximum of 6 video examples (maximum length per example 3 minutes).
Please include:
- A short description with each piece of work.
- If they were produced in response to a brief, please indicate what the brief asked you to do.
- Storyboard ideas or anything that is sequence based and tells a story.
- 5 visual research and development of ideas. These should evidence storyboards, mood boards, visual experimentation, sketches, and research with accompanying notes reflecting on your development.
Please aim to show your production process and working methodologies. For example; concept design, idea generation, design planning, visual experiments, sketches, observations and research.
Please add a short description with each image.
What we're looking for
We are looking for your portfolio to demonstrate your:
- Understanding of television and broadcasting as a subject and its wider social and global context
- Ability to express your creative process and decision making
- Ability to show original ideas for new formats (Studio and Factual)
- Ability to reflect on what is, and is not, successful about your work
- Interest in historical and contemporary visual culture
- Enthusiasm and commitment to study television and broadcasting at university level
Experience of video production, editing (Avid Media Composer), TV programme making, writing and presenting for television, video encoding, Camera kit, sound kit and an understanding of basic web design are essential.
We also want to see evidence that demonstrates that you've learnt the technical and theoretical aspects of television and broadcasting and television production.
You'll also need initiative, creative air and an ability to learn in a creative environment.
Your portfolio should demonstrate evidence of:
- Original idea generation
- Conceptual development
- Experimental work
- A good level of technical ability (both traditional and digital)
- An ability to select and present a range of work to a professional standard
