Thomas balanced his job, coursework and personal practice to pursue his academic goals in BA (Hons) Photography

Before attending the University of Portsmouth, I’d been a retail manager for several years, but found it unfulfilling. This led me to change my career to something more creative, satisfying and better suited to me. I attended two of the University’s Open Days and was impressed by the department’s reputation and facilities.
It’s been quite challenging to balance a job, coursework and a personal practice, but the results have been worth the effort I’ve put in. It also took a couple of years to settle into an area of artistic and theoretic study that will allow me to produce meaningful work, which can be developed and expanded upon at postgraduate level.
After graduation, I’ll be moving on to postgraduate study alongside developing my professional practice by pursuing opportunities that have arisen during my time at university. The end goal for me is to move on to studying a PhD and eventually becoming a lecturer.
