Applying to the University of Portsmouth
To apply to the university, you need to use an approved University of Portsmouth Agent. These can be found at the bottom of the page. You will not be considered if you apply directly or through an unauthorised agent.
Entry requirements for students from Pakistan
If you're joining us from Pakistan, the entry requirements you need to meet will depend on the course you want to study.
We consider all applications we receive. However, to make sure you get the most out of your time studying with us and have the best chance of applying successfully, we recommend the following minimum qualifications:
Foundation courses
If you have the Year 10-Secondary School certificate, you'll usually need to do a foundation year before doing an undergraduate course such as a Bachelor's degree.
We recommend you take a foundation course at our associated college International College Portsmouth (ICP).
Undergraduate courses
If you've completed a foundation course, we'll consider you for admission onto an undergraduate course such as a Bachelor's degree.
You can also apply with:
A levels
- Please check your specific course page to find the exact number of points needed. Your A level grades should equal or exceed the total points required. You can use the UCAS Tariff Calculator to work out your total points.
- Some courses will require you to have studied specific subjects at A level. For example, to study a science course you will usually need to have achieved passing grades in scientific subjects at A level.
- A level points: A* = 56 A = 48 B = 40 C = 32 D = 24.
International Baccalaureate
- Most courses will require between 24 and 31 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB), depending on the degree you apply for.
You must have studied relevant subjects and achieved strong grades.
Year 12-Intermediate students are generally not accepted directly into year 1. However, if you have completed Pre-Engineering or Medical Inters and scored over 80%, we may consider you for direct entry depending on the course/faculty you are applying for. We can accept applications from 60% and above for BEng (Hons) Engineering and Technology with Foundation Year.
You may be able to join an undergraduate course with other qualifications. We do consider qualifications from a range of sources. Contact us to find out more.
Postgraduate courses
For entry to our postgraduate Master's programmes, you'll usually need to have a four year Bachelor's degree from a recognised Higher Education institution:
- For courses which require upper second class degrees (2:1), you will need 65%–70% or GPA 2.6–2.8
- For courses which require lower second class degrees (2:2), you will need 60%–65% or GPA 2.4–2.6
We also accept applications from students who have completed 2-year Bachelor's degrees, plus 2 year Master's degrees with 60% and above from recognised universities.
If you don't meet the postgraduate entry requirements, you can do a pre-Master's programme at International College Portsmouth (ICP) for many of our courses.
PhDs
We'll consider you for a PhD if you have a good Master’s degree and submit a research proposal.
English language requirements
When you join us, it’s important that you can speak and understand English to the level that your course requires. The specific English language requirements will be on your chosen course page.
We accept IELTS, IGCSE and several other certificates, but don’t worry if you're currently short of the standard required – we offer English Language Programmes that will get you to the necessary level.
All eligible applicants who have received an offer will be invited to complete an online Credibility Interview and pre-CAS questionnaire checks through CAS Shield.
The Credibility interview recording will be retained for 6 years. If you have received an offer but not received an invitation to CAS Shield, please get in touch with pakistan@port.ac.uk
For the credibility interview you must:
- Have a strong, reliable internet connection
- Your passport for ID verification
If you have taken the Duolingo English language test, the English language condition will be cleared after a successful credibility interview.
Interviews will be conducted when all of your offer conditions have been met, except for your tuition fee deposit and Student Route Eligibility questionnaire.

Information for Muslim students
Portsmouth is a multicultural and very welcoming city that's home to people of all faiths and cultures interacting – and as a Muslim student, you will not stand out or feel out of place. There are two mosques in Portsmouth, as well as many locations on campus and in the city to get certified Halal food.
The Islamic Society of Portsmouth (ISOP) is one of the most active societies on campus. They give everyone a chance to increase their awareness and knowledge of Islam, practice their faith and get involved in various activities. They also organise weekly Jummu'ah prayers for both brothers and sisters at Islamic prayer rooms on campus, one for brothers and one for sisters, with ablution facilities. You will also be able to speak to chaplains from all faiths, including Islam, at our university chaplaincy.
