University is an experience
University is so much more than studying
When choosing to go to uni, the focus is on what course you would like to study. And of course, a lot of your time is spent studying and working towards achieving your degree. But university is about so much more than just what you study.
The Students’ Union
Most universities have a students’ union. The union works in a similar way to a school council, in that it is run by students who have been elected to represent the voice and opinions of the whole student body.
The union, or SU, work with the univeristy to make sure that every student feels welcome, represented and has a wonderful experience of university. Part of this is offering a range of sports clubs and societies that students can join.
Sports clubs
At university students have the option to join both sport teams and clubs. So those who want to compete against other universities can join a team. And students who would prefer to just take part in the sport for fun, and to keep fit, can join a club.

Societies
A bit like after school clubs, societies are groups that any student can choose to join and run separately to their studies. Most university societies are based around topics of interest or hobbies. For example, here at Portsmouth we have a gaming society, a book club, a cinema society and many more.
Some societies are also based around cultural or political interests, for example the Afro-Carribean society, the Feminist society, or the Liberal Democrats student group.
Why join a society?
Signing up to join a society can have a really big impact on your university experience.
