Doctor of the University
A chartered management accountant with a broad experience in business.
A graduate in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Oxford, Bill Salmond built a successful career in senior financial and management roles. As a chartered management accountant, he applied his financial acumen to great effect at companies from the UK to Australia, among them Unilever, J Lyons, and Wilkinson Sword/Allegheny International Inc.
Bill has held high-level business planning and acquisition, financial and treasury positions, including a significant tenure at Geest Line Ltd, a Hampshire shipping and fruit trading company. There, he served as Finance Director, Commercial Director UK and Caribbean, and Corporate Affairs Director before taking on responsibilities as Managing Director for a decade. He restructured the business, taking it from loss back to profit before retiring in 2009.
Bill joined the Board of Governors at the University of Portsmouth in 2010, serving first as Finance Committee Chair (2012) and then Chair of the Board from 2014 to 2017. Today, he is fully retired, with a focus on family, and continues to follow the progress of the University with interest.
