Michael Newey graduated from Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1986 with a degree in Urban Land Administration. He went on to qualify as a Chartered Surveyor and, at 32, became one of the youngest Fellows of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 1996.
After a period in private surveying practice in London, Michael moved to the social housing sector, joining Peddars Way Housing Association in Norfolk (1997) as Development Director and subsequently taking on the roles of Executive Strategy Director at Anglia Housing Group (now Clarion, 2000).
In 2003 he became Chief Executive of Broadland Housing Association, where he remains and chairs two of the Association’s subsidiaries.
His non-executive career includes such highlights as serving on the Surveying Courses Board, responsible for accrediting RICS degrees worldwide.
Michael’s senior roles within RICS include Chair of the UK Residential Policy Panel, the Global Public Affairs Committee, the Global Communications Board, and the Global Strategy Advisory Board. He was elected Vice President in 2010, was Global President in 2013/14 and was appointed to the RICS Global Standards and Regulatory Board. He represented RICS on the European Housing Forum (Brussels) 2000 - 2006 and was its Chair 2002 - 2005. He retired from active RICS involvement in 2022.
With a strong commitment to surveying education, he has been an external examiner at Oxford Brookes, Glasgow Caledonian, and the University of Portsmouth. He has chaired the Real Estate and Land Management Advisory Board at the Royal Agricultural University since 2014, and the University of Portsmouth Surveying Advisory Board since 2015.
Michael was a founder and serves on the Board of Homes for Cathy, committed to ending homelessness. In 2008/9 he worked with the Minister of Housing, Victoria, Australia as Special Adviser on growing the community housing sector to support low-income Victorians.
In 2015/16, he chaired an Economic and Social Research Council panel investigating and sourcing funding for what became the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence. He was appointed Vice Chair of the Norfolk Strategic Housing Partnership in 2021, part of the county’s COVID response and commitment to ending homelessness in Norfolk.
He has chaired Norwich Theatre Royal Trust since 2015, overseeing strategic and governance renewal and survival during the pandemic.
He is involved in both his local church and in Norwich Diocese, churchwarden of St Mary’s North Elmham, authorised by the Bishop to lead services and appointed (2021) to the newly formed Asset Management Committee, overseeing the Diocese’s residential and investment portfolios.
He is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Housing and the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).
