A flexible and supportive approach to learning has enabled Jon to achieve an MA Business Management Master’s degree as well as progressing his career
This degree has provided me with so much. I’ve learnt a lot about management and business theory, and I’ve learnt a lot about myself.
The University of Portsmouth has given me the support when I needed it and the freedom to express myself in equal measure. The MA Business Management course has provided me with the evidence and theory to underpin my strategy and recommendations at work, allowing me to be a more rounded and professional leader within my chosen field.
The perfect balancing act
I enjoyed my Foundation degree in Business and Management that I studied via the University at Havant and South Downs College, and gained a lot of theoretical knowledge so I thought ‘let’s step it up a level’. I chose to study at Portsmouth as I have always enjoyed working with the University and the Learning at work degree programme addressed my needs perfectly, allowing me to balance studying with a demanding job.
I’m in a fairly new role as Regional Commercial Director for Bauer Media, with responsibility for the South and South West of England. We have local, regional and national radio stations that our teams represent, alongside digital and print assets. We provide audio, print and digital advertising solutions for many clients, from SMEs through to global brands and everything in between.
When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two kids at home. I am a keen runner and can be seen running the streets of Chichester as well as pursuing another hobby, cycling. Whether on my road bike or mountain bike, there’s always a beautiful ride nearby and there’s nothing better than getting caked in mud in the woods on my bike after a hard day at the home office to relieve some stress!

Reaping the benefits
In all honesty, this Master’s has assisted me in progressing my career. I’ve had two recent promotions since embarking on this qualification. And while it’s not entirely down to my degree, I’ve absolutely no doubt that it’s provided a significant helping hand. It has taught me to think differently, provided me with newly discovered knowledge and theory alongside strategic working practices which have fed into my day-to-day role. And in the future I’d like to continue along my path in senior management with Bauer Media.

The University has taught me to never stop learning. And for anyone considering studying there I’d say, if you have the drive and ambition to progress your career and learn new things, this is a fantastic qualification run by a wonderful team with student’s interests at heart.
