Exciting opportunities lie ahead
Why your students might go to university
Studying at university is a very individual experience, one that could change your students’ lives in many ways.
Some may choose to go to uni to pursue a particular career. Others go to make new friends and live somewhere amazing. Whatever the reason, going to university can give your students new opportunities. And for any of them still wondering if it's the right decision for their future – this page looks at the benefits of going.
Career Benefits
Boost career prospects and earning potential
Getting a degree unlocks doors to exciting careers and opportunities. And your students are more likely to have higher salaries within their careers if they have a degree.
Research by The Institute of Fiscal Studies found that university graduates are on average £100,000 better off over their working lives after taxes, student loan repayments and foregone earnings are taken into account. Your students may need a degree to follow the career path they want, if they are interested in something like Nursing or Dentistry.
Work experience
At university, your students will have lots of opportunities throughout their degree to get work experience and improve their employability skills.
That could include short work experience placements throughout their course, or a year-long industry placement, depending on the course. If enhancing their CV and work experience is important to them, then have them keep this in mind while they're evaluating a course.
Networking opportunities
University is a great place to make contacts that will help your students to build their future. Their lecturers will be able to use their connections to help students secure placements, internships, and even jobs after graduation.
Students will also mix with other students on their course, or on other courses which complement their career goals. These relationships can come in useful in future, when your students have graduated and are entering the world of work, and later on in their careers.
Academic benefits
A course to suit them
Whether your students like hands-on learning, or prefer writing essays, there’s likely to be a course for them. Your students will be able to specialise within their course area, get involved with fascinating research, and become a subject expert.
And with amazing facilities, from top of the range lab and testing facilities, to healthcare simulations, and extreme conditions testing units, there’s so many ways to learn.
Supportive teaching staff
Your students will get a dedicated tutor who will support them through their time at university. So whether they are struggling with a deadline, or are having personal issues, support is just an email or face-to-face meeting away.
At Portsmouth, students can also visit their lecturers in their office hours, to get support with any module-specific questions or issues.
Fall in love with Portsmouth
We’re more than just an island city. Hear from our students who love Portsmouth, read their blogs and see why it's one of the best places to live in the UK.
Our facilities
Sports facilities, teaching spaces and labs - we're investing to deliver the best experience to our students, researchers, business partners and our community.
Careers and Employability Support
Get excellent careers support during your degree and for 5 years after graduation. We help you find part-time and graduate jobs, volunteering and work experience.
Personal benefits
Transferable skills
Your students will gain and develop many transferable skills throughout their time at university. They’ll improve their teamwork, problem-solving, time-management, presenting and critical thinking skills, and many more.
These will not only help them in their future careers, but will also prepare them for life after university, helping them to develop into well rounded adults.
Make life their own
At university, your students have the freedom to shape their lives how they want them. Whether they want to fit their studies around social events, societies or taking part in sports, the choice is theirs.
As long as they go to their classes, it’s up to them to fit whatever else they want to do into their week.
Feel at home
Students become more independent and responsible throughout their time at university. It’s an opportunity to live somewhere different and exciting, or to explore their local area from a new perspective.
They’ll make lifelong friendships and meet people from a wide range of countries, cultures and backgrounds. University is a great time for your students to pick up a new hobby, or to develop a passion they already have.
