Getting the most out of mentoring
A guide for mentors and mentees
The Mentoring Sessions
Usually about hour long, mentoring sessions should be arranged at a time and frequency agreed between the mentor and mentee. It is recommended that there should be a minimum of three mentoring sessions delivered to enable progress to be made, but relationships can often last longer.
Session 1 – Introduction and Goal Setting
- Establish rapport and discuss expectations.
- Define confidentiality and accountability agreements.
- Identify long-term career aspirations and success criteria.
- Agree a schedule/frequency for meetings
Session 2 – Goals and Development Plan
- Review previous discussions.
- Set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals.
- Discuss strategies for achieving objectives.
Ongoing Sessions – Progress and Adjustments
- Review and adjust goals as needed.
- Address new challenges and opportunities.
- Celebrate achievements and learning.
Final Session – Evaluation and Next Steps
- Assess progress against initial objectives.
- Identify areas for continued growth and learning.
- Reflect on the mentoring journey and key takeaways.
