Getting the most out of mentoring

A guide for mentors and mentees

The Mentoring Sessions

Usually about hour long, mentoring sessions should be arranged at a time and frequency agreed between the mentor and mentee. It is recommended that there should be a minimum of three mentoring sessions delivered to enable progress to be made, but relationships can often last longer.

Session 1 – Introduction and Goal Setting

  • Establish rapport and discuss expectations.
  • Define confidentiality and accountability agreements.
  • Identify long-term career aspirations and success criteria.
  • Agree a schedule/frequency for meetings

Session 2 – Goals and Development Plan

  • Review previous discussions.
  • Set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals.
  • Discuss strategies for achieving objectives.

Ongoing Sessions – Progress and Adjustments

  • Review and adjust goals as needed.
  • Address new challenges and opportunities.
  • Celebrate achievements and learning.

Final Session – Evaluation and Next Steps

  • Assess progress against initial objectives.
  • Identify areas for continued growth and learning.
  • Reflect on the mentoring journey and key takeaways.
