The £1,000 Compact Scholarship is available to students studying at one of our Compact colleges, who have been made an unconditional offer for 2025 entry as part of our contextual offer making strategy to support students from widening participation backgrounds.

You will need to meet or exceed your predicted grades in order to receive this scholarship. You do not need to apply for this scholarship, applicants will be notified directly if they are eligible for the scholarship.

Eligible students

  • 1.1. The financial scholarship is a £1,000 award open to:
  • 1.2 Students who are studying at and have applied directly from one of the University’s Compact colleges

AND meet the following criteria:

  • 1.3 Students who have been made an unconditional offer as a result of our contextual offer making strategy 
  • 1.4 Students who have applied by the UCAS Equal Consideration deadline.
  • 1.5 Students who meet the above condition, who firmly accept an offer from the University to study a full-time eligible undergraduate course, starting in September 2025 and successfully registers on year 1 on this course.
  • 1.6 UK students (International and European Union students are not eligible to receive the Scholarship).

Academic criteria

  • 3.1 Successful applicants will meet or exceed all predicted grades stated in their application.
  • 3.2 Applicants must complete their exams and exceed our minimum standard entry requirements - 2 A levels (at A* - E) and 2 GCSEs (at grade C/grade 4 or above).

Application process

  • 4.1 There is no need to apply for the Scholarship; applicants will automatically be considered and notified if they meet the student eligibility criteria. 
  • 4.2 Applicants will not be notified if they do not meet the student eligibility criteria.

Timescales

  • 5.1 Scholarships will be allocated and students notified once examination results have been confirmed and verified.
  • 5.2 During the registration process, students will be required to update the MyFinance section of the Student View with their bank details.

Payment

  • 6.1 Students must have completed their registration onto year 1 of their course to receive the Scholarship.
  • 6.2 Students awarded the Scholarship will receive a £1,000 scholarship in the first year only. This will be paid in three instalments in December, February and May The scholarship payment is subject to students registering and providing their bank details. The University of Portsmouth will inform eligible applicants of how and when these payments will be made at the earliest available opportunity. If students do not provide their bank details for payment within 9 months of starting their course, they will not receive the scholarship. 

Operational terms and conditions

  • 7.1 Scholarships will be made to successful students, subject to the availability of the limited awards.
  • 7.2 Scholarships are subject to applicants receiving an unconditional offer as part of our contextual offer making strategy, which they select as their firm choice.
  • 7.3 Students who defer their place to September 2026 or later will be eligible for the scholarship, however the scholarship will be subject to availability and change. 
  • 7.4 The £1,000 scholarship will be paid into a bank account provided within the MyFinance section of the Student View.
  • 7.5 Successful applicants will be required to fully register onto their course to remain eligible for the scholarship. This entails completing the online registration form and providing original evidence of their personal identity within the first week of the start date of the course, and paying the residual balance of any fees, or confirmation that their fees will be paid by the Student Loan Company. Any extension to become fully registered onto the course will need to be requested through the late registration process. If this does not happen students will become ineligible to receive the scholarship.
  • 7.6 Students who suspend or withdraw from their studies before receiving the full payment of the award will become ineligible for the scholarship. No extenuating circumstances will be taken into consideration.
  • 7.7 Applicants who receive the University of Portsmouth Scholarship will still be entitled to apply for student loans, bursaries and scholarships, subject to their eligibility. 
  • 7.8 The University’s decision on the allocation of the scholarship in accordance with these terms and conditions is final. There is no appeals process.
